Forager Project’s plain, unsweetened yogurt is already a staple in my diet, but I was curious to see if their flavored lineup held up to the same standard.
What I Think About Forager Project Blueberry Cashew & Coconut Yogurt
Right off the bat, I noticed the color. It’s a really pretty, glossy mauve or deep, stony berry shade, which I learned is au naturelle, because they use fruits and veggies to color the yogurt rather than artificial dye. Love.
Consistency
The texture is smooth and silky. There are small pieces of blueberry in the yogurt, but they are barely, and I mean barely, there. It isn’t really chunky like, say, Yoplait Original. You can see itty bitty specks of blueberry there, but they don’t have any noticeable texture at all.
The consistency also isn’t exactly thick. It’s slightly thinner than your average dairy yogurt, but not by much. The cashew base isn’t super rich or heavy. It’s more milky, rather than creamy, if that makes sense.
Taste
It uses cashews and coconut for the base, but you can’t taste any coconut flavor at all. I did notice a pretty strong cashew aftertaste, though, which I didn’t mind because I like cashews. If you don’t like cashews, however, the aftertaste is definitely noticeable enough to keep in mind.
The tang is very, very mild. I would rank it at about 2/10 on the tart scale. It isn’t super tart like your average yogurt, but more sweet like Yoplait.
They have 4 flavors:
- strawberry
- blueberry
- peach
- vanilla bean
I picked my go-to, blueberry. It has a distinct natural blueberry smell and taste, but the taste isn’t overpowering. I mostly taste cashews, if I’m being honest, but the blueberry flavor is definitely there. I would say there’s just enough berry flavor, considering this is a clean, natural yogurt.
Nutrition
Forager can honestly rival dairy yogurt, imo. I love it, but how does it stack up when it comes to what’s important: nutrition?
Healthy Fats
Because the yogurt has a plant base, you get a good amount of healthy fat (7g) in each serving. More than regular dairy yogurt, which usually tries to keep fat content at a minimum.
Total Sugar
You’ll notice the yogurt is sweet, but it actually uses way less sugar than most dairy yogurt. 9g total. 8 of those grams are added sugar, but if it’s any consolation, the added sugar is cane sugar, which is a lot cleaner than super high-processed, refined white sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. And if we’re being honest, some dairy yogurt brands are worse with up to 19g of sugar in a small cup.
Protein
There isn’t a lot of protein in this one. Just 3g. But remember, it’s made from cashews, not milk, so the expectations have to be a little different than dairy.
If protein is a non-negotiable for you, they do have a Greek-style yogurt, which has over three times the amount of protein. I haven’t tried it yet, but if their plain style is any indication, it’s at least worth a try.
Micronutrient Profile (Calcium & Vitamin D)
This plant-based yogurt isn't fortified, which means the company didn’t add any extra vitamins and nutrients to the yogurt that don't already occur naturally. Expect about 2% of your daily value of calcium in a 5.3 oz cup.
Price
I bought a 5.3 oz cup on Amazon Fresh for $2.00. (Prices may vary, though)
Overall,
For a plant-based yogurt, it comes VERY close to Yoplait imo. But the taste is noticeably cleaner because they swapped:
artificial sugar and high fructose corn syrup cane sugar
fake dye blueberry, carrot, black currant, and apple juice
artificial thickener natural locust bean gum and agar
This is a good yogurt to eat if you’re looking for a good alternative to dairy yogurt because it’s a really easy transition to plant-based eating. Their plain, unsweetened yogurt is already in regular rotation in my house, but this blueberry flavor is a nice change when you want a little, something sweet.
